Ballast Water: Biosecurity Regulations Keeping Pace with Industry
For decades, various industrial sectors have introduced and implemented relevant biosecurity regulations and technologies to protect global food security, national agricultural interest, and biodiversity from the risks of diseases and invasive species.
This presentation will outline a few land-based biosecurity approaches and regulatory frameworks for developing, approving, and verifying practical and effective methodologies and management practices. These experiences on land may benefit the maritime industry in evaluating and addressing its biosecurity challenges such as international food waste, ballast water, and hull biofouling.
Dr Wei Chen specialises in environmental science, technologies and regulations. He gained his PhD at Leeds University and has 35 years of experience across different industries, including water/wastewater and maritime industries. He worked for Hamworthy and later Wartsila Wastewater Systems Ltd, a UK-based manufacturer business, for nearly 20 years, in charge of Engineering and R&D. He has extensive experience on ships providing process commissioning, troubleshooting, and training. He is also an advisor for governmental and non-governmental organisations. He has been the Director of EN Decision Ltd since 2022, providing environmental consultancy focusing on ships’ waste, wastewater and biosecurity solutions and the related specifications, compliant operations, training, and regulatory developments.
