Abstract

The world is demanding the maritime industry to reduce its carbon footprint. Owners and charterers want more efficient vessels to lower operating costs. While doing these, the focus on safety must be maintained. The regulation and business pressures are driving the industry to create more complex systems with diversified options. Advanced multi-physics simulation that taps the capabilities of multiple disciplines of engineering is changing the way that ships and rigs are designed, tested, and classed.

This talk will introduce advanced simulation of marine systems and discuss its potential for the digitalization and decarbonization of the maritime sector. Three primary use cases for advanced simulation around decarbonization, validation of performance of complex software-driven systems including autonomous functions and virtual testing or commissioning of systems will be discussed in the talk.

About the Speaker

Dr. Gu is ABS Vice President and Head of Global Simulation Center. Prior to this appointment, he was a Director in ABS Corporate Technology and was responsible for contracted research and development, including joint industry projects and projects funded by global governments.

He currently sits on the Digital Twin Panel of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and is an Executive Group member of Ship Structure Committee (SSC). He was a member of the International Advisory Panel of Singapore Maritime Foundation on Decarbonization in the Maritime Sector from 2020 to 2021.

He holds a Doctor of Engineering in Naval Architecture from Hiroshima University, Japan.
