New IMarEST Ocean Decade ambassador sets out priorities

Niru Dorrian, the new IMarEST ambassador to the United Nations Ocean Decade, has pledged to promote the safe and sustainable use of the ocean by channelling the collective expertise of IMarEST members.

As the largest professional body of its kind, we conceived the role of ambassador to align our activities with the crucial aims of the United Nations Ocean Decade. Niru’s tenure will last three years, and he takes over from Dr Stephen da Mora.

Niru’s top priorities include:

  • Catalysing research, innovation, and policy coherence by channelling member expertise.

  • Engaging marine professionals as stewards of the ocean, promoting high standards of professional practice and recognition of skills and competence.

  • Ensuring equity, inclusivity, and transparency across the marine sector.

  • Undertaking advocacy at the highest level and growing partnerships globally.

Niru Dorrian said: “Becoming UN Ocean Decade ambassador is a great responsibility and an immense honour. I hope that my work over the next three years will help the IMarEST make a lasting contribution to the future of our oceans.”

Peter Sheppard, Head of Technical and Policy at the IMarEST said: “Niru is passionate about the marine world, and I know he will make a huge difference as UN Ocean Decade ambassador. We are indebted to dedicated members like Niru, who work tirelessly to ensure our industry has a sustainable future.”

Niru is a marine mammal specialist who has long been instrumental in shaping the future of marine science within IMarEST. He played a pivotal role in establishing our Marine Mammal Special Interest Group (MMSIG) in 2020 and has co-chaired the group since, leading numerous outreach and educational initiatives.

His appointment as UN Ocean Decade Ambassador is a unique opportunity for Niru to amplify his lifelong dedication and commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable marine management.
