Learning from Everyday Work - Rescheduled

Delivering a Safe Working environment through Learning from Everyday Work

Technical Presentation - Rescheduled

Synopsis

Safety and Safety Management is now a large focus of everyday life and a critical part of every working endeavour.

Delivering a safe working environment consistently requires more than a cook book approach.  The Learning Teams and Learning from Everyday Work approach breaks the top down cookie cutter approach.  It ensures that those who do the work, and who are exposed to the risks, understand and are intelligently engaged and contribute strategic advantage through understanding normal work. Learning from Everyday Work and The Practice of Learning Teams are a practice and framework that can be employed to improve safety, generate performance and enable the workforce to meaningfully contribute to Human and Organisational Performance and ultimately strategy.

From Learning from Everyday Work: “There is a unique opportunity before us, to support workers and allow workers to lead in understanding and managing the adaptability of the work they do every day. And for the organization to support workers by learning from those weak signals and better understand how to continuously learn and improve the systems to aid in everyday successful work”.

Presenter

Mr Brent Sutton is an accomplished facilitator, presenter, and author. He is the co-author of The Practice of Learning Teams: Learning and improving safety, quality and operational excellence and Learning from Everyday Work, and the host of the weekly podcast of the same name.  He has had significant engagement with the maritime and related industries in New Zealand so is able to relate his message easily to maritime folk.  Notably he is involved in the work health and safety project order that was sought by Fullers in relation to an incident with KEA in 2017.  The court made the order in June 2020 and the work utilising a Maritime Learning Teams approach is still underway.  Brent Sutton collaborates with the likes of Todd Conklin, who wrote the foreword to The Practice of Learning Teams, and Sidney Dekker, both of whom are well known international practitioners of Human and Organisational Performance and Do Safely Differently which are akin to Brent’s philosophy and approach.
