IMarEST launches award for outstanding apprentices in marine engineering, science and technology

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology is delighted to launch the Lady Hamlyn Award which offers funding to apprentices who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their professional development in the marine sector.

In launching this award, we hope to support apprentices throughout the course of their apprenticeship and ease their transition into a maritime career.

This award ties in with the IMarEST’s new appointment as an End Point Assessment Organisation for the Marine Engineer and Boatbuilder Level 3 apprenticeships. This process is designed to test whether each apprentice completing these programmes has gained the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard, and to grade each learner according to their performance.

This award has been made possible by Lady Helen Hamlyn, who is internationally recognised for her design aesthetics and philanthropy. Lady Hamlyn has been involved with the IMarEST, and the Guild of Benevolence since the 1940’s through her father who was a chief engineer.

“I am really pleased that, through the generosity of Lady Hamlyn, we are able to offer this funding to apprentices at this crucial time when there is a great need for appropriately skilled professionals within STEM in the marine sector. Vocational education is more important now, in 2019, than it has ever been and it is a crucial route for allowing talented young people to bring their strengths in creativity and innovation to the global economy”. David Loosley, Chief Executive, IMarEST.

Applicants must be undertaking an apprenticeship in a discipline relating to either marine engineering, marine science or marine technology and will need to be Student members of the IMarEST (student membership is free). Funding of either GBP £500 or GBP £1,000 is offered depending on the applicant’s country of study.

Deadline for applications is 31 March 2019. You can see the full criteria here.
