IMarEST awards £500 student bursary to compare ship-ice interaction parameters
The IMarEST has awarded a £500 student bursary to Sabina Idrissova who is currently a research assistant in the Marine Technology Department in AALTO University in Finland. She is also in her final year of an apprenticeship in shipbuilding and ocean technology at the Institution St. Petersburg Marine Technical University. She is aiming to compare the ship-ice interaction parameters determined from the energy method (using full-scale data) with theory (energy method).
“I would like to thank IMarEST for funding my participation in the 25th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions (POAC). It was my first experience to be a part of such an important event for researchers and engineers in the marine sector as the event included around 200 participants from over 30 countries.
The conference is held every two years and it aims to tackle unique ice-related problems applicable to coastal and offshore engineering in the Arctic and Antarctic. The safety of operations under ice conditions is one of the most challenging issues in marine engineering. My studies are related to the problem of ship-ice interaction and ice loads on the ship's hull. On the POAC, I presented the results on "The study of the Popov method for the estimation of ice loads on the ship's hull using full-scale data from the Antarctic sea". This research topic is a part of my Masters Thesis, which I was writing in the Aalto University under the supervision of Pr. Pentti Kujala in the Marine Technology Department.
In Delft, I had the opportunity to meet scientists and engineers who are pioneers in the field of naval architecture and ocean technologies for ice conditions. I shared my knowledge and experience of studying and working in ship-ice related problems. I received recommendations from several experts, which will certainly help me during my future research and career in marine engineering.
IMarEST has an important impact on encouraging people to share their thoughts and ideas and to collaborate in the marine sector across the world. Furthermore, I am inspired by opportunities provided by IMarEST in education and careers. The IMarEST bursaries are targeted at undergraduate and postgraduate students, cadets and apprentices who are studying or working in the marine engineering, marine science and marine technology disciplines and related topics. The bursaries aim to encourage and support student members to work on research projects or community-based projects.
