IMarEST accredits MPA Singapore’s training programme in first ever online assessment
The IMarEST has accredited a training programme for marine surveyors for the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Academy as part of its ongoing efforts to champion providers of high-quality training and foster professionalism across the marine sector.
Obtaining this internationally recognised stamp of excellence involved a rigorous peer-review process, analysis of the technical content taught and the processes in place to ensure effective delivery of the programme. The IMarEST’s independent assessors offered their academic expertise to ensure continuous improvement of the programme and provide advice on international best practice.
Given the logistical difficulties brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the MPA team worked with the IMarEST to facilitate the accreditation online and all the assessments were made virtually – a first in IMarEST history.
The virtual meeting sessions covered topics ranging from programme design and assessment channels to quality assurance procedures and trainee selection/development. There was also a session with five marine surveyors for the assessors to gauge their perceptions and experiences of the training provided.
Several areas of excellence offered by the training programme were identified, including the wealth of opportunities to work and gain experience in the wider global maritime sector as well as the provision to support marine surveyors, regardless of rank, to pursue personal and career development opportunities and academic qualifications.
The IMarEST’s accreditation programme offers education and training establishments an independent assessment of their undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering, science and technology. It demonstrates the syllabus meets internationally recognised academic standards and provides students the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for professional registration. A rigorous peer-review process, analysing technical content taught and the processes in place to ensure effective delivery of the programme.
