Abstract
The speaker has contributed directly to offshore engineering practice since the 1990s through research and development, and provision of expert advice to construction and installation of some major structures. His research team has investigated the complex responses of lift system, lift components and knowledge-based engineering design system for heavy lift.
The lessons learnt from different construction techniques will be elaborated to review the impact of available construction equipment on successful completion and installation of offshore structures. He will conclude with features of recent and future installation of offshore systems.
About the Speaker
Professor CHOO Yoo Sang is Adjunct Professor in National University of Singapore (NUS) and Distinguished Visiting Professor in Tsinghua University. He is Consultant of Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS).
He served as Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair Professor in NUS from 2009 to 2017. He was the 106th President of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) in 2008, and was IMarEST's first President from Asia.
Professor Choo was Founding Director of Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering (CORE) when it was set up in NUS in 2004, and then served as Director (Research) of CORE. He has served in expert panels in International Standards Organisation TC67/SC7 Offshore Structures, and International Institute of Welding (IIW) Sub-commission XV-E: Tubular Structures.
He has received a number of international and national recognitions, including Lifetime Achievement Award - Maritime Academics (2009) and Lifetime Achievement Award in Marine & Offshore Engineering (2021). He and his research team have won best paper and engineering achievement awards.
Professor Choo has served in many scientific and technical committees of international organizations and conferences, and hosted as Chairman or Co-Chairman for some of the conferences and symposia. He served as President of Singapore Structural Steel Society (1992 to 1994) and President of Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore (2012 to 2015).
He has served as technical consultant or expert witness in major offshore projects, and initiated or participated in international joint industry projects. He has served as Principal Investigator in a number of R&D projects, including Structural Integrity Management Programme on Offshore Structures, and Joint Industry Project on Grouted Joints. He has led IMarEST panels to accredit university degree programmes in China, Malaysia and Singapore.
