BT Technology runs second STEM Returners programme

Last November, STEM Returners (an initiative run by the IMarEST and the Women's Engineering Society) parterned with BT Technology to embark on an innovative pilot to address the engineering skills shortage by attracting back engineers after a career break.  The programme was an overwhelming success where 100% of programme participants have now joined the business in varying roles across several sites. BT were overwhelmed by the fantastic capabilities and skills of those returning and want to make sure that they are removing all the barriers for returners to re-join and develop within BT.  We are delighted to be partnering again to offer more return opportunities across Suffolk.

With 13,000 expert technologists supporting consumer, business and enterprise customers both in the UK and across the globe, Technology has a unique position in BT – by bringing together technical and commercial expertise and an insight and passion for customer experience, they help BT stand out from the competition.

BT knows that returners often face an insurmountable barrier to returning to work after a career break, be that because of a perception by hirers of a deterioration of skills, or a lack of flexibility. BT’s ground-breaking programme is showing career break returners that they really value those skills that they have gained whilst out of industry, and that they can return to their career flexibly. All programmes offered the option of flexible working and shift patterns that suit the operational requirements of the business and those looking for something that’s not always 9-5!

The programme is open to men and women in Suffolk and surrounding areas who have taken any length career break, as well as those who wish to transfer sectors but lack the relevant work experience.  We are looking for returners with experience in one of the following areas for positions in Delivery Engineering, Operations Engineering and Support Engineering.

  • STEM background
  • Telecommunications
  • IT
  • Network Operations

Candidates signing up to the ‘STEM Returners’ programme will join a paid 12-week structured return to work programme, which will include soft skills training, technical training and on the job experience, as well as coaching and mentoring support.

At the end of the 12 weeks, job offers will be made by BT to those who have shown the necessary skills and aptitude to join the engineering specialists. This isn’t just work experience, but a genuine opportunity to restart careers within an exciting global organisation.

Candidates wishing to apply for the second programme have until 22nd March 2019 and can do so through: https://www.stemreturners.com/company/bt/

Seetal Bhatti, HR Director said “I am delighted with the outcome of the trial we ran in November, we attracted a wide diverse population of talented people who were just looking for this type of programme to kick start their career again. I am so looking forward to meeting our next round of applicants, so would encourage anyone who is thinking about getting back into employment to give this a go. ”

Natalie Desty, Founder of STEM Returners said “We are so excited to be running this programme in partnership with BT again.  BT really value the skills and experience that returners have to offer which was demonstrated in them offering permanent roles to 100% of its returners”
