Become a Trustee of the Guild of Benevolence
Our partner charity, the Guild of Benevolence, is seeking nominations for new trustees. Professor James Crabbe CMarSci FIMarEST, the chair of the board, provides an insight into its history and activities, and explains why becoming part of the board of trustees is a worthwhile and fulfilling role.
As chair of the Board of Trustees, I am honoured to invite applications from passionate, committed individuals to join the Guild of Benevolence as trustees.
For over a century, the Guild has stood as a beacon of compassion and solidarity, offering vital support to marine engineers, scientists and technologists and their families in times of need. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our cherished charity and ensuring its mission continues to thrive. Your involvement could make a profound difference to countless lives, and we warmly welcome you to join us in this meaningful endeavour.
By becoming a trustee, you will also join a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to making a tangible impact. Together, we can help steer the Guild toward a future of even greater achievements and outreach.
A Legacy of Support
The Guild’s origins trace back to 1912, when it was established to provide assistance to the families of the RMS Titanic engineering officers who tragically lost their lives in the mid-Atlantic.
Since then, the Guild has grown in scope and purpose, expanding to address the diverse hardships faced by marine engineers, scientists and technologists and their dependents across the globe. Our work includes offering regular grants to supplement modest incomes, educational grants and assisting with essential costs such as care fees, home repairs, and funeral expenses.
In 1934, the Guild expanded its remit to include support for those affected by the aftermath of the First World War, broadening its reach to many more families in need. The
merger with the Marine Engineers Benevolent Fund in 1989 marked another pivotal moment, uniting efforts to serve the community more effectively.
In 2001, the Guild adopted its present name to align closely with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, reflecting its broadening mission and international scope. This enduring mission is made possible by the generosity of our individual members, corporate donors, and thoughtful legacies, as well as careful stewardship of our
investment portfolio.
The Guild remains deeply committed to alleviating hardship, upholding its century-long tradition of care. It is through this robust legacy that we continue to honor the profession’s contributions while fostering a sense of solidarity within the marine community. Every story of support reflects our unwavering commitment to those who have dedicated their lives to maritime endeavors.
Join Us in Making a Difference
We are now seeking new trustees to guide the Guild into its next chapter of impactful service. Serving as a Trustee is a rewarding opportunity to bring your expertise, enthusiasm, and vision to a Board dedicated to meaningful change.
Trustees hold office for a three-year term, with the option for re-election, and collaborate to oversee the Guild’s activities, governance, and long-term strategy. Whether you bring professional experience, fresh ideas, or simply a strong commitment to helping others, your contributions will be invaluable.
Applicants are encouraged to become members of the Guild. Joining is straightforward, with options for annual or lifetime membership. If you feel inspired by our mission and ready to make a difference, we encourage you to apply. The role also offers a chance to build your leadership skills and expand your understanding of the charitable sector.
Please express your interest by contacting us at [email protected] or calling 020 7382 2644. We will send you an application form. Applications close on Wednesday, 31 January 2025.
Together, let’s continue to uphold the Guild’s enduring commitment to care and compassion.
