Become a Mentor with IMarEST M2M
We are looking for volunteers for M2M Mentoring, our new upcoming member-to-member mentoring programme. This initiative is a key part of our refreshed learning and development offer, designed to help our members succeed in their careers. And with our industry facing a workforce shortfall, it’s crucial we do all we can to ensure people thrive, and chose to stay, in the marine sector.
Nicole Luque, our learning and development manager, describes what being a mentor is all about, and how to sign up.
At the IMarEST we are fortunate to have members with invaluable experience and knowledge. We’re now looking for those individuals to guide newcomers starting their careers or assist peers navigating their next career move. Experienced marine professionals have much to offer, from overcoming challenges to completing successful projects or working with outstanding teams—these insights can make a world of difference to others.
Becoming a mentor is more than just an act of generosity it’s a great opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to your industry, refine your leadership skills, and build lasting connections with fellow professionals.
What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship where an experienced professional (the mentor) shares their knowledge, insights, and guidance with someone looking to grow personally or professionally (the mentee).
It’s a collaborative process that helps mentees set goals, overcome challenges, and develop skills. Ultimately, mentoring is about fostering growth, building confidence, and creating a positive impact for all involved.
Why become a Mentor?
There are lots of great reasons to become a mentor:
-
Give back to your industry: As a mentor, you can play an active role in shaping the future of marine engineering, science, and technology. And with the maritime industry facing a major job shortage, we need all the help we can to support the success of the next generation.
-
Develop your skills: Mentoring is a two-way street. While you guide your mentee, you’ll also develop your own leadership, coaching, and communication skills – valuable attributes that can boost your career and enhance your professional impact. M2M Mentoring provides access to learning resources for both mentors and mentees, helping you develop skills to ensure productive and meaningful conversations.
-
Build stronger networks: Through M2M, you’ll meet professionals from diverse backgrounds who share your passion for the industry. Mentoring relationships often develop and grow into long-term business friendships.
-
Find personal fulfilment: Seeing someone succeed with your guidance and support is an incredibly rewarding experience. Mentors often have a deep sense of pride from knowing that they’ve helped someone progress in their career.
What is expected of a Mentor?
As a mentor, you’ll be matched with a mentee based on your professional background, expertise, and interests. Your role is to:
-
Share your knowledge, insights, and experiences.
-
Offer guidance on career progression, skill development, and goal setting.
-
Provide constructive feedback and encouragement.
-
Serve as a trusted advisor and sounding board.
The time commitment is flexible and can be adapted to fit your schedule. Mentoring can take place virtually through our online platform, offering convenience for both mentors and mentees.
What makes a great Mentor?
If you’re passionate about your work and would like to help others succeed, then mentoring is a great fit for you. You’ll just need to hold the IMarEST Member or Fellow grade, be a strong communicator, and have a willingness to develop your mentoring abilities.
