We offer a unique opportunity for a Technical Advisor - Marine Decarbonisation, welcoming applications from individuals with varying levels of experience (to two to ten years) and a genuine interest in energy transition issues/challenges related to shipping and the maritime sector.
Experience of shipping industry/maritime sector is essential. The primary focus of this role is on shipping decarbonisation and emission reduction measures. The ideal candidate should be capable of working independently with minimal supervision within the defined scope of work, maintaining effective communication with member organisations and industry partners.
The position is remote, the candidate must be UK-based. Frequent commuting to central London is required in addition to regular international travel.
Responsibilities
Advisory Role:
- Provide data-driven technical advice on marine alternative fuels and emission reduction measures
- Conduct research and review existing work in shipping decarbonisation and sustainability areas
- Interpret study results objectively and respond to inquiries
- Draft and develop studies, guidelines, or other outputs in defined shipping energy transition and decarbonisation areas
- Review and understand maritime regulations such as IMO GHG strategy and FuelEU, assessing their impact
- Draft and develop guidance/papers to support the understanding and implementation of regulations
Project Management:
- Effectively manage multidisciplinary expert working groups' discussions and meetings
- Participate in industry workshops and meetings as an independent subject matter expert
- Schedule and plan projects, tasks, and activities
- Review progress against deadlines, monitoring and controlling multiple projects
- Provide regular project updates and reports
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engage in one-to-one interactions with SGMF members, stewarding relationships effectively
- Foster relationships and create networking opportunities across the membership
- Manage membership communication, develop materials, and present relevant matters during forums, events, and conferences
- Maintain and develop relationships with industry partners, including NGOs and industry bodies
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE in the shipping industry and/or maritime sector
- KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE in energy transition, sustainability, and the decarbonization of the shipping sector
- PROVEN ABILITY TO DRAFT AND PREPARE REPORTS and guidance in a clear and concise manner
- DEMONSTRATED CAPABILITY TO WORK REMOTELY, independently manage conflicting priorities, and make decisive decisions
- Excellent research skills with attention to detail
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Take personal responsibility for identifying and resolving issues
- Demonstrated self-motivation and the ability to work independently
- Ability to work as part of a small team as well as able to work on own initiative and be trustworthy
- Create a credible and professional image to the various stakeholders
- An excellent command of written and spoken English
- Okay with frequent travel abroad
- Computer literate: Confident user of Microsoft products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Team
Desirable:
- STEM Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
- Knowledge of energy transition issues related to alternative marine fuels such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen
- Familiarity with applicable international best practices and environmental regulations, along with experience in dealing with regulatory bodies
- Proven track record in technical reporting and delivering presentations
About SGMF
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is an industry non-governmental organisation (NGO) established to promote safety and industry best practice in the use of gases as a marine fuel.
The Society has over 140 international members ranging from energy majors, port authorities, fuel suppliers through to equipment manufacturers and classification societies. It is governed by a representative Board and driven by two principal Committees. SGMF has several working groups at any one-time solving issues and producing outputs such as Guidelines and checklists for the industry.
The Society has produced several ISBN publications, and supported the development of life cycle analysis for alternative marine fuels and it has Consultative Status with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
