Abstract:
Over the past year, the Lloyds Market Association Joint Hull Committee has been reviewing increases in both the frequency and severity of losses related to shipping in the Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes marine industry is fairly unique globally, in that large merchant vessels are laid up on an annual basis and minimum crew being assigned to monitor and maintain the fleets. The global insurance market, traditionally led from the Lloyds syndicates in London, are implementing new warranties and requirements for vessels laid up in this area, which will require some preparation by Owners, managers and their technical teams.
Mr. Walker will present and discuss the background to some of these losses, the likely requirements that will be proposed and best practices for identifying risk and mitigation going forward.
The presentation will provide an understanding of the risks of vessel layups specific to the region, what insurers are concerned with and how the risks can be managed. This will be most useful for port engineers, those involved in ship operations/management, insurance, and surveying. It will also give some areas of thought for those designing vessel machinery and mooring systems for these regional challenges.
