Two to three years ago the thought of nuclear in civil maritime was confined to left field thinkers and fantasy. Today nuclear is seen as holding huge promise due to its zero carbon emissions, favourable maintenance requirements, periods between refuelling measuring at worst case once every five years and at best full ship life, along with the potential to transit at high speeds whilst other fuels favour low speeds.
How do we get there from a start point of almost no civil nuclear-powered ships, very limited regulation, ports that need to understand and develop requirements and only one western Flag State currently able to accept them? Along with looking at the potential technologies this presentation will endeavour to address these aspects of nuclear in maritime.
