Often referred to as a black art, tonnage has often proven to be the bane of most naval architects. This presentation will cover a brief history of tonnage measurement going back to Roman times, the development of the tonnage measurement systems currently in effect, some of the principal “rule breakers” currently in use to reduce gross tonnage, and their impact on vessel design, construction and maintenance. Presentation will include 1-2 case studies.
