As demand for renewable marine energy surges alongside the continued need for conventional resource development, the intersection of technology, environmental stewardship, and public policy is becoming increasingly complex. This talk will review recent developments in offshore energy policy—highlighting the Inflation Reduction Act, permitting reforms, and potential future changes following the 2024 elections. We will also explore how innovative technologies, like remote sensing, might help address environmental challenges such as whale-vessel conflicts while advancing sustainable energy development. Additionally, the session will examine the regulatory landscape of deep-sea mining, focusing on the balance between economic opportunity and environmental protection. By analyzing key developments and the political forces at play, this talk offers a high-level perspective on the future of maritime resource development in a rapidly evolving world. This presentation is anticipated to be accredited for 1 PDH. To obtain PDH credit, participants must attend the meeting and submit a completed Learning Assessment and Application Form to the designated representative upon conclusion of the meeting. Remote attendees are to submit a completed Learning Assessment and Application Form directly to SNAME.
