Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) considers the overall environmental impact of processes, activities and operations. For ships, this covers the life of the vessel, from the extraction of raw materials, use of fuel, operations and ultimately recycling. In this talk, Dr Yifan Wang will give an overview of how LCA works, and will talk about some of his research work in assessing alternative fuels and the concept of “well to wake” in assessing the overall impact of new fuels.
Dr Yifan Wang is a lecturer in Yacht Engineering at Solent University. He holds extensive knowledge within the sectors of naval architecture, shipping management, sustainable shipping, low-emission energy systems, and oil & alternative energy market analysis. He worked as postdoctoral research after receiving his PhD degree for the EU research project ISHY to investigate the potential of decarbonise the ships in the EU region from the perspectives of ship design optimisation and fuel switching. Currently Yifan’s research is looking into including low-carbon ship/energy system design, development of lifecycle models to evaluate the performance of alternative fuel-powered ships, fuel bunkering management strategy and bunkering port selection, fuel bunking costs and freight revenue optimisation and the whole supply route performance estimation for sustainable marine energy systems of the future.
