Immediate Past President, IMarEST

Martin is the Immediate Past President of IMarEST and was the 120th President. He has been in IMarEST for over 50 years. He was born in Glasgow and brought up in Clydebank. He went to Allan Glens School. With that background a career in Marine Engineering was inevitable!

He joined BP as an Engineer Cadet and studied at Hull Technical College and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies. He returned to GCNS for his 2nd, 1st and ultimately Extra 1st Class Certificates. The latter leading to Chartered status. After serving at sea, he came ashore as an Engineer Superintendent and Fleet Safety Officer. Following this he completed an MBA at Cranfield and moved into a number of management positions included Fleet Management, Shuttle Tanker and LNG Projects, New Ship purchase and ultimately VP HSSE and Technical Vice President for BP shipping and marine activities.

He pursued a second, or third, career in consulting before becoming focussed on volunteering for IMarEST. He headed the Human Element working group for five years and represented IMarEST in the Human Element Industry Group.

He was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service for his contribution to Marine Safety in 2021 and became President in 2023 where he led a revitalisation of the Council and renewed interest in Merchant Shipping.

He is a Younger Brother of Trinity House.
