Abstract:

The Port of New York and New Jersey (the Port) is a conduit of global commerce and a major generator of jobs and economic activity in the region. It is the largest port on the East Coast of North America, the second largest in the nation, and one of the most productive high-volume port operations globally. In addition, the City of New York (the City) has over 520 miles of coastline, more than the coastline of Miami, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco combined. The Port's 10 miles of wharf structures and the City's marine and ferry terminals provide the key infrastructure for the safe mooring and berthing of vessels and other watercraft essential to the City and the entire mid-Atlantic.

This presentation will provide insight into the typical design and construction of facilities for the berthing and mooring (both temporary and permanent) of vessels in the waters of New York and New Jersey. The first part will provide details on the typical regional structure types and review the cost, resilience, and permitting pros and cons of the various options. Utilizing this basis, the presentation will provide an overview of the interaction of vessels and the marine structures during berthing and mooring, covering fender systems, mooring appurtenances, and key structural and geotechnical design considerations. Finally, the presentation will conclude with examples consisting of a floating ferry barge, new pier, and a marine terminal. The examples will review regional permitting challenges, constructability, and long-term maintenance considerations.
