IIOE-2 has developed into one of the world's largest contemporary multi-national ocean science initiatives. Five decades on from the pioneering International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-1), the second IIOE was launched in 2015 and is planned to continue to 2030. In the context of a changing climate, ever increasing human-induced pressures and responding to the urgent need to improve our understanding of the dynamics and ecology of the Indian Ocean, IIOE-2 has developed into one of the world's largest multinational ocean science initiatives.
