Our staff are taking some well-deserved time off, so our offices will be closed for the festive period from Wednesday 25th December to Wednesday 1st January inclusive.

Laurie Prandolini Research Fellowship

The Laurie Prandolini Research Fellowship provides an annual grant, for up to two years, to a Doctoral candidate or post-Doctoral researcher in a marine discipline.

Established in the memory of Laurie Prandolini, this research fellowship is awarded to a selected candidate from the Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific (ANZSPAC) region.

Candidates must be judged to be of outstanding potential to enable a significant piece of work to be undertaken at Doctorate (PhD) or post-Doctorate level in a relevant topic.

Who is eligible?

Individuals applying for the Fellowship should: 

  • Have obtained a relevant engineering or scientific degree or equivalent

  • Propose a piece of research relevant within the fields of marine engineering, science & technology

  • Have, as a minimum, at least 18 months research, and/or documentation time remaining before the final submission of their thesis papers, exclusive of approved extensions

In memory of Laurie Prandolini

The Laurie Prandolini Research Fellowship was established in November 2011 to honour the memory of the late Lawrence (Laurie) Prandolini, OAM, CEng FIMarEST MIEAust MRINA. Laurie made an outstanding contribution to the maritime community in the Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific (ANZSPAC) region, and to the IMarEST, nationally and internationally.

He began a long and distinguished career as an apprentice servicing sugar mills at Babinda, Northern Queensland. He went away to sea in December 1945 with the Adelaide Steamship Company on steam reciprocating ships, then on the Orient Line and the Union Castle Line. Laurie became Surveyor and Examiner of Engineers with the Department of Shipping and Transport, where he gained a degree in Naval Architecture. He then worked for the Yarrow Admiralty Research Department, and Vickers at Cockatoo Island, where he was Commercial Manager both times.

He retired in December 1988 and continued to work tirelessly to promote marine engineering, playing an active and valuable role in the IMarEST’s Sydney Branch for over 30 years.

The application must be accompanied by a statement of support from the sponsoring organisation/university which sets out the capabilities, skills and aptitude of the candidate and their ability to benefit from the course of study or research to be undertaken.

Please note that as a condition of the award, the IMarEST is to be kept updated of any technical papers or other outputs arising from the studies or research. The winner also agrees to work with the IMarEST Marketing and Communications Team to publicise the award and any resulting papers or presentations.
